Preseasoned Thoughts #1
Landon Reed
OK, I know it's only preseason but that's going to stop me from sharing what
I think I'm seeing early on with a few players. I will write that preseason is
football is not like preseason in baseball, which counts for almost absolutely
nothing. Preseason football is a few steps ahead of that level, though I am
always cautious to not let a few good plays alter my draft board radically. You
should be thinking the same way --especially as you read this blog.
Another thing to bear in mind is that we all come into preseason with
preconceptions about who will play well and who is a hidden gem. Then the games
are played and we see things --or don't see things as the case may be- that
shakes our thinking. It's important to resist radically changing your plans
unless a guy's play is so great as to warrant it.
Chad Greenway is a sleeper pick of mine for the coming season.
Apparently I like him a lot because I've added him to several of my teams this
season. He's on three of the four teams I have. (The 4th league isn't done
drafting and, yes, Chad is waiting out there.) I'm not sure if this is the start
of another man-crush for me (Urlacher was my first), but it's feeling that way.
Mostly, I've been adding him because he's coming to me at almost no cost. No one
is really competing to land him; so I keep picking him up. He looked quite good
against the Jets. He moved really well on the field and threw himself into
players with abandon. His 5 tackles and 1 interception were a nice step up from
his lone tackle week one. So, keep those scopes trained for Greenway news and
plays. If he's there for you on the cheap (i.e in really late rounds) take a
shot on him.
Antoine Bethea is looking more and more like the real deal in
Indianapolis. His stats have been so-so, but he's in on nearly every play. If he
continues to develop along these lines this season he will be impossible to keep
as your secret next season. As good as Bethea has been, I couldn't help but
notice the performance Marlin Jackson has
put on in his two halves of play: 9 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles, and a
pick. Wow! Oh, and if you haven't guessed it yet, I do have Marlin on one of my
dynasty squads. Cecil nabbed Bethea from me, but not to worry I have my, ehem,
"Taylor"-made Voo-doo doll working overtime.
I caught most of the Falcons versus Bills game and have to admit that
Stephen Nicolas looked pretty good. I am not
convinced he's going to be a high impact player this season, but I can no longer
simply dismiss him because he's a rookie with opportunity in Atlanta. If, and
it's a big if, I can get him for nothing in a league I will. His tackle numbers
are looking good in preseason, but it is only preseason. For now, Cecil gets the
credit for putting Nicholas on the IDPBlitz scope as a potential sleeper. He
made my sleeper list but in a backhanded manner. I wanted to watch
Chris Houston, Atlanta's rookie DB in action
but he wasn't involved in many plays. I'll be looking at him as a possible
in-season add because he's A. a rookie starter and they tend to be challenged
often and B. he's playing opposite D-Angelo Hall and along with Jimmy Williams.
So, he's the guy offensive coordinators will try to exploit.
That's it for now. I'll attempt to revisit this topic soon as players get
even more time on the field of play.
