Heroes and Zeroes - Week 4
What a day for the big play lovers! Many sacks and interceptions, topped off
by the New York Giants Osi Umenyiora's incredible 6 sack performance. It was a
game for the ages as the Giants tied the NFL sack record with a total of 12.
Most double-sackers made the Hero list but Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Mark
Anderson each failed with 2, and Derrick Johnson missed with a sack and an INT.
Double digit tacklers Antoine Winfield, Morlon Greenwood and Patrick Willis just
missed because of the plethora of big plays. Keith Smith returned an
interception for a TD, and both Tyron Brackenridge and Kawika Mitchell returned
fumbles for touchdowns.

Last Week's Stats |
Comments |
|
Adewale Ogunleye, Chi |
5 tackles, 1 assist, 2 sacks |
Adewale tried but the Bears were just too short on D today. |
|
Ernie Sims, Det |
8 tackles, 3 assists, 1 interception, 1 pass defensed, 1 fumble forced |
Ernie was the box score stat filler of the week as he chalked up numbers in
almost all categories. |
|
Jared DeVries, Det |
5 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 fumbles forced |
Jared was the sub of the week as he came off the bench to sandwich Griese 3
times as well as making many other plays. |
|
D.J. Williams, Den |
11 tackles, 2 assists |
D.J. led all tacklers in his specialty on Sunday. |
|
Julian Peterson, Sea |
4 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 fumbles forced |
Julian led a crushing Seahawk D in almost shutting out the 49ers. |
|
Marcus Trufant, Sea |
3 tackles, 2 interceptions, 4 passes defensed |
Trufant played wingman to Peterson in making sure San Francisco went
nowhere. |
|
Darnell Dockett, Ari |
5 tackles, 3 assists, 3 sacks, 1 fumble forced |
Ordinarily a triple-sacker wins the Hero of the Week notice. Not this time. |
|
Osi Umenyiora, NYG |
6 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 fumbles forced |
I missed the late great Derrick Thomas's 7 sack performance in 1990 so this
is the greatest individual defensive performance that I have ever seen.
Absolutely incredible. |
|
Mathias Kiwanuka, NYG |
5 tackles, 2 assists, 3 sacks |
Mathias' 3 sack performance was overshadowed by his teammate's phenomenal
game. |
|
Justin Tuck, NYG |
6 tackles, 1 assist, 2 sacks |
And Justin's 2 sacks seemed very ho-hum considering his running mates'
games. |

Last Week's Stats |
Comments |
|
Kenechi Udeze, Min |
2 assists |
No tackles. No passes defensed. Where was he? |
|
Anthony Henry, Dal |
1 tackle, 1 pass defensed |
I started Anthony as a Hero last week and paid for it by starting him with
this poor performance on Sunday. |
|
Leonard Little, StL |
blanked |
Leonard suffered a right knee sprain and never returned. |
|
Adam Archuleta, Chi |
blanked |
Adam never had a chance Sunday as he was on the Bears inactive list. |
|
Robert Mathis, Ind |
1 tackle |
One whole tackle for Mathis. Big deal. |
|
Julius Peppers, Car |
2 tackles, 1 assist |
2 Zeroes in a row for Julius. And 4 crummy games in a row. He's always
been a late starter but it is past time for him to get with it. |
|
Cato June, TB |
1 pass defensed |
Cato's known for his tackling but not in the June offseason. Guess he
thought it really was June. |
|
Tamba Hali, KC |
blanked |
Unlike Little and Archuleta, Hali had no injury excuse for his putrid game. |
|
James Farrior, Pit |
1 tackle, 2 assists |
The Steelers had an embarrassing day against Arizona. Farrior's poor effort
"led" them. |
|
Trent Cole, Phi |
1 tackle, 1 assist |
I watched my Giants dominate on almost every play and didn't hear Trent's
name called once. A Hero last week with 3 sacks, he came up very small on
Sunday. |
