IDP Blog: 4th Round Gems
Cecil Taylor
You probably didn't get real excited about the 4th round of the NFL draft
this spring. Perhaps you should have. There are a lot of good IDPs who came into
the NFL in prior 4th rounds. Here's just a sample:
- Kerry Rhodes, SS, Jets - One of the best safeties in IDP right now.
- Jared Allen, DE, Chiefs - He's been a terrific pass rusher since Day 1.
- Donnie Edwards, LB, Chiefs - Can you believe this IDPBlitz Hall of Famer
was a 4th rounder?
- Terrence McGee, CB, Bills - Last year was off, but owners love him for his
kick returns. Not a bad CB, either.
- Asante Samuel, CB, Patriots - Led the league in INTs last season.
- Nathan Vasher, CB, Bears - Always an INT threat himself. His career high
is 8.
- Shaun Phillips, LB, Chargers - Burst onto the scene with his sacking ways
when Steve Foley's career derailed.
- David Thornton, LB, Titans - Solid but unspectacular, despite 1 great
season as the Colts WLB.
- Alex Brown, DE, Bears - His star is on the wane right now, but he was
solid last year.
- Aaron Smith, DE, Steelers - A borderline player for many rosters.
- Bradie James, LB, Cowboys - Never has really broken out, but the potential
is there.
- DeShea Townsend, CB, Steelers - Always good for 4-5 sacks/INTs per season.
- Larry Foote, LB, Steelers - A low-end choice for many rosters.
- Sean Considine, SS, Eagles - Could be a breakout player this year.
- Anthony Henry, CB, Cowboys - Career high of 10 INTs.
- Dexter Jackson, SS, Bengals - Was a Super Bowl MVP.
OK, you get the picture. Fourth rounders shouldn't be overlooked. So
here's the important point: Which 2007 4th rounders could one day be added to
this list? Here are 5 candidates:
- Marvin White, SS, Bengals - Big hitter who will sub for Jackson
when (not if) he gets hurt. White could also see time at FS as Madieu Williams
slides to CB in the nickel. Prediction: White will start next year at one of
the safety slots.
- Tanard Jackson, S, Bucs - A great athlete who has been impressive
so far. His time will come.
- Brian Robison, DE, Vikings - The DE rotation is just not that
strong. At what point will the Vikes give up on Kenechi Udeze and Erasmus
James, both early round flops? Robison is athletic enough to contribute on
special teams until then.
- Clint Sessions, OLB, Colts - A fleet but undersized LB, he fits the
Tampa-2 scheme. Could challenge Freddie Keiaho at WLB sometime down the line.
- Kareem Brown, DT, Patriots - Probably won't make much noise this
year, but perhaps he'll be a factor in future seasons.
