Projecting the training camp election winners
In Election Day fashion, here are the projected winners in several training camp battles. We are definitely extrapolating here, but with about 1/3 of the "precincts" reporting (2 weeks into a 6-week preseason), here are the current totals and our projection of the winners, sorted in order from least certain to most certain. By the way, these predictions are all reflected in this week's Draft Kit updates. DENVER MLB
Projected winner: Nate Webster, with 55% of the vote so far.
Webster took over the starting MLB job in spring OTAs and has held off free agent Niko Koutouvides...and held him off...and held him off. Despite being brought on board specifically to take over for D.J. Williams at MLB, Koutouvides has been unable to unseat Webster. Preseason games may change this ranking, but you have to admire Webster's tenacity so far. KANSAS CITY MLB
Projected winner: Pat Thomas, with 55% of the vote so far.
Thomas was a surprising contender; we mentioned him a week ago. The Chiefs have been disillusioned with incumbent Napoleon Harris, and Thomas is being given every chance to win the job. Surprisingly, too, because we thought KC would shift Donnie Edwards to MLB and insert Demorrio Williams at OLB in his place. But Williams doesn't seem to be impressing, either. Meanwhile, Thomas is starting to shine with more reps. This one has a ways to go, but notice that practically no other IDP site even mentions Thomas in its rankings. If you have a draft coming up soon, he's a sleeper you can stockpile. SAN FRANCISCO FS
Projected winner: Dashon Goldson, with 60% of the vote so far.
Mark Roman is still out, recuperating from offseason surgery. Goldson's playmaking performance seems to be changing the mind of HC Mike Nolan, who can't help but notice how Goldson is all over the field, doing good things. Roman is the conservative choice, Goldson the liberal choice in this election. Goldson represents playmaking ability that is lacking and desired in the 49ers defense. If Goldson can just prove that he won't get beaten deep, Nolan might just oust the incumbent. Goldson could be your steal of the draft. MIAMI CB
Projected winner: Andre Goodman, with 75% of the vote so far.
This job was supposed to go to Michael Lehan. But he dislocated his ankle in June, and Bill Parcells doesn't like injured players. So Goodman looks like he has won the battle, simply by showing up. The only thing is, you can bet this will be a season of churn in Miami. The Dolphins are experimenting all over the place - heck, DE Matt Roth and even lumbering vet DT Vonnie Holliday are being tried at LB! In that environment, no one, especially Goodman, can feel too comfortable. Our advice: Stay far away from practically any Dolphins IDP this season. Except maybe Channing Crowder. TENNESSEE MLB
Projected winner: Ryan Fowler, with 85% of the vote so far.
You would think that Stephen Tulloch would have a chance to change HC Jeff Fisher's mind. He's been playing with the 1st unit and making plays while Fowler has been out. And Fowler might get a steroid-related suspension. But no, Fisher is still committed to Fowler, his prized free agent of a year ago. Although Fowler is possibly the worst fantasy MLB now that Mark Simoneau has been replaced in New Orleans, Tulloch will have to hope for playing time. Here's a tip: Tulloch's contract expires in 2009. Look for him to be the Niko Koutovides of Spring 2010, landing a big pact to start elsewhere. Stash him away next year in deep dynasty leagues. WASHINGTON SS
Projected winner: Reed Doughty, with 100% of the vote so far.
Hey, Stuart Schweigert was released. Game over. Doughty will start at SS, LaRon Landry at FS. While he is a marginal IDP, you have to root for a guy like Doughty. He is partially deaf, and he spent a good portion of the spring tending to his young son, who had a kidney transplant. Given a chance, who knows? Doughty might surprise you, like he's been surprising his doubters just by winning the SS job.
