ADVISORY on Excel Macro Usage

Some users have been having a problem with Excel macro usage when they bring up the spreadsheets. This is a problem with your local Excel settings, not with the spreadsheet.

The reason is that Excel views macros suspiciously, so it has different security levels: High, Medium and Low. They behave as such:

  • High - Macros will not run. Instead, when you try to click on a Macro button, it will try to bring up the macro code in another window. This is the problems some users are encountering.
  • Medium - This is the mode we recommend. In this mode, Excel asks you if you want to enable macros when the spreadsheet comes up. Click the Enable button. Macros will then work as intended.
  • Low - Macros will work in this mode for any spreadsheet you bring up. Our spreadsheets will work properly, but you may have problems with spreadsheets from other sources.

To set your Macro security, do the following:

  • Click on the Tools menu at the top of Excel's window.
  • Click on Macros.
  • Click on Security.
  • Click on Medium.
